The Tovarischi label gave birth to a new 'sound' to Doukhobors - singing with musical instruments. After marrying Frank in 1955, eventually Ruby joined Frank in releasing records on the Tovarischi label, solidifying their popularity.

Post 78's era, Frank & Ruby began an impressive career that boasted both single and album (LP) releases, LP releases with their children, and a vigorous performing agenda.

The first recordings in the 1950s were in Spokane with SRC, subsequent recordings were made in Vancouver, and later even at the legendary Tom T. Hall's studio in Nashville.

By the 70's, the Konkens had firmly established their artistic credibility, touring and playing such events as the Calgary Stampede, Expo, and a myriad of in-between venues.

Not many Doukhobor families didn't own at least one LP, and the Konkens were one of the few Doukhobor recording artists that actually received considerable airplay with their Russian lyrics/singing!

"Their house was a happening place socially after musical events when they lived here. That was the opportunity for the touring head-liners to get acquainted with the locals and vice-versa."

In May 2013 on their way to Festival in Brilliant, BC, Frank & Ruby kindly offered their time to do this interview with DoukhoborMusic.ca.

Worth noting, the Lower Mainland Doukhobor Choir devoted their evening performance at Festival in Brilliant to the memories of Tovarischi releases. Immediately following, the Victoria Doukhobor Choir dedicated their rendition of 'Papa Moi Papa' to Frank & Ruby. (This particular video performance can now be seen in our Video tab).

A fitting tribute to this artistic couple who made an impact on so many!
