Anna P. Markova
1902-1978, mother of John J. Verigin

After her arrival to Canada in 1960, Anna P. Markova visited many communities in British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. In the fall of 1962 she was invited by the Slocan Choir to visit their communities.

She was a very talented singer and brought with her from Russia many new hymns for the Doukhobors to learn. Her dedication and love for singing is heard as she sings a duet with herself.

Claybrick:

This photo was taken at the brick factory built by our forefathers in the village of 'Claybrick', 1 kilometer north of Winlaw, BC. When our forefathers moved to BC in 1908, they purchased land in the West Kootenay and Grand Forks areas. They cleared the land and planted large orchards, berry and vegetable gardens, built canning and fruit packing plants, jam factory, sawmills, and brickworks. They lived communally and the Doukhobor way of life. Living in Canada for the past 100 years, we are grateful for their beliefs and achievements. With our songs we give tribute to our courageous forefathers.
