The singing of psalms beautifies our souls
The
preservation of the singing/chanting of psalms has been important to some Doukhobors and groups. The Slocan Valley Choir has been taking part in this practice since its inception in 1957. In this video clip taken from The Psalmist Project (2008) Mike Jmieff explains an innovative way of teaching the psalms to others.

* What used to be a core of the Doukhobor belief system and group singing, psalm-singing has dwindled to a part-time religous expression. During the making of The Psalmist Project, it was discovered that the elders today know and can collectively perform perhaps a total of 40 psalms - of a collection that a century ago, numbered somewhere in the 400's.This sad fact is part of the motivation for the Slocan Valley Choir's passion to preserve paslm-singing.

In 2015, the Slocan Valley Choir decided to take another step in preservation, and initiated their self-pubished booklet of Psalms in Dot Form. The Introduction page acts as a synopsis and reads as follows:
|
This year, 2015, will be 58 years since the formation of the Slocan Valley Choir. The singing/chanting of Psalms was always part of the Choir repertoire. Over the years, it has become more and more difficult to memorize these Chants that have been passed down by our Forefathers. Our Choir Director, Mike Jmieff, came up with the idea of using Dots, along with the letters of the words in the Psalms, in different formation, to assist our learning of these Psalms. To have something physical to observe and follow; the flow of the Chant (sound) is much easier to learn.
We are grateful, that Mike, along with his wife Nina, continue to take the time to Direct the Choir.
We are also grateful to all past and present Choir members that made and make Psalm singing important to them.
Cпасибо /Thank you

Perhaps the most ambitious project the Slocan Valley Choir has undertaken to date in the quest to preserve Psalm-singing, was the decision to put the booklet on the Internet along with the actual recorded psalms.
In 2018, the oral renditions of the psalms of the Slocan Valley Choir Collection of Psalms booklet were collected from various sources and in some cases digitally restored from old source tapes made by the founding members themselves (Sue and Bill Voykin), and are made available by clicking on any of the Psalms of the booklet's table of contents, linked below. As this module is a work in progress, those titles that are not clearly visible have yet to be done).
Now, not only can the 'dot form' psalms be downloaded in PDF formatf for printing and reference, but actual singing/chanting of the psalms can be heard in MP3 form and downloaded for others to learn if they wish.
